U Mobile has announced that it will discontinue its GoPayz e-wallet service on 31 March 2025 as part of a strategic business decision. The digital wallet, launched in 2019, was introduced to provide users with a seamless and inclusive financial platform.

With the service closure, users will no longer be able to reload their GoPayz accounts after 31 December 2024. However, they can continue to use the platform for transactions, bill payments, fund transfers, and loyalty point redemptions until the final shutdown date in March 2025.

GoPayz users are encouraged to withdraw their remaining balance and redeem accumulated GoPointz before the service is fully deactivated. After 31 March 2025, any unutilized funds or loyalty points will no longer be accessible.

U Mobile has expressed appreciation for its customers’ support and reassured users that they can explore alternative digital payment solutions to meet their financial needs.

The General Manager of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Datuk Dr. Anderson Tiong Ing Heng, stated that this initiative enables S PAY GLOBAL users to scan other DuitNow e-wallets.

“Other DuitNow e-wallets can also scan merchants’ e-wallets within S PAY GLOBAL. Therefore, this new feature opens up more opportunities for better connectivity, ensuring smooth transactions for the people of Sarawak,” he said in a statement today.

Tiong added that this initiative is in line with the Sarawak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 (SDE 2030), which focuses on modernizing Sarawak’s financial infrastructure.

Hii Saan Chieng, General Manager of SiliconNet Technologies Sdn Bhd, stated that enabling DuitNow in S PAY GLOBAL provides an easily accessible platform for users in terms of finance.

Azrul Fakhzan Mainor, Senior Director of PayNet’s Commercial Division, mentioned that by integrating the DuitNow QR, the people of Sarawak will be better connected within the global payment ecosystem, accelerating trade flow.

“Since DuitNow QR operates with global payment networks, we will see more cross-border transactions taking place. This collaboration enhances the customer experience both inside and outside Sarawak, contributing to the e-wallet transformation,” he said.

Marzunisham emphasized that e-payments are safe to use, with banks implementing various measures to protect against cyber threats and scams. Additionally, e-payments like DuitNow QR are easy to use. With just a simple scan of a QR code, payments can be completed instantly. The registration process for merchants to accept DuitNow QR is also simplified, especially for those who already have an account with the relevant bank or e-wallet provider.

The immediacy of e-payments benefits businesses as well, with payments received directly into merchants’ accounts. This allows for better cash flow management, and the data recorded from transactions can help build a credit profile for merchants to access financing from financial institutions.

BNM, along with the financial industry and government, is committed to ensuring that every individual, regardless of background or location, has access to safe, convenient, and instant e-payment services. The e-Duit Desa program aims to bring e-payment awareness and confidence to rural communities, helping them adopt digital payment methods securely.

Since its launch in 2020, the e-Duit Desa initiative has expanded significantly, with nine programs launched in 2024 alone. Marzunisham also acknowledged the efforts of the Kedah State Government for its support, with many local departments and agencies offering e-payment platforms to residents.

Combating Financial Crimes

While the benefits of e-payments are clear, Marzunisham also cautioned about the risks associated with online financial crimes, including scams. He urged the public to adopt the “Soal, Sekat, Sebar” (Question, Block, Share) approach to protect themselves from fraud. This involves questioning any suspicious financial offers, blocking potential scams, and sharing information about scams with family and friends.

He also advised against participating in mule accounts and to remain vigilant to the tactics used by financial scammers. In the event of becoming a victim of fraud, Marzunisham encouraged individuals to report the incident to their bank or the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) via the hotline.

During a pilot phase starting in May 2024, Qashier onboarded over 1,500 merchants in the food and beverage and retail sectors, processing nearly RM2 million in transactions within two months. The Soundbox supports multiple e-wallet QR payments, including DuitNow-enabled apps like TNG e-wallet, Shopee Pay, and BigPay. It also features a display of recent transactions, trilingual audio alerts (English, Malay, and Mandarin), next-day payouts, and portability with Wi-Fi and SIM capabilities.

To promote adoption, the first 1,000 businesses registering between July 24 and August 31, 2024, could purchase the QashierPay Soundbox at a promotional price of RM199, which included a 12-month data plan. This initiative is part of Qashier’s ongoing efforts to support small and medium-sized enterprises in embracing digital payment solutions.

Qashier has processed over US$1 billion in transactions since launching its payment solution in 2022, serving more than 7,000 merchants across Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
